There are a few simple policies for this. But extreme caution ought to be used, since there is issues in which the rules are not appropriate, so local issues needs to be fully understood before an interpretation can be made.
These circumstances are generally unusual, even so they should not be forgotten about whenever unraveling the geological history of a location.
The idea of superposition claims that sedimentary layers were transferred in sequence, in addition to levels at the bottom is over the age of those at the very top. This case may possibly not be real, though, if the series of stones might flipped completely over by tectonic steps, or interrupted by faulting.
The principle of initial horizontality suggests that sediments were initially transferred as horizontal to nearly horizontal sheets. At a broad measure this is true, but at a smaller sized size it might not become. Eg, cross-bedding types at an appreciable position, where mud try placed upon the lee face of a ripple. Similar is true of delta foreset beds (Figure 19.6).
Figure 19.6 A cross-section through a river delta forming in a lake. The delta foresets include described “Delta deposits” within figure, and you will easily notice that the leading face of the foresets are definitely more perhaps not transferred horizontally. The concept of horizontal continuity shows that sediments is transferred such that they offer laterally for some range before getting thinner and pinching out within edge of the depositional basin. […]
